Diamonds come in all different colors. In nature, there are brown, green, blue, and even some pink and extremely rare red diamonds. For the most part, however, diamonds range from white to shades of yellow and brown.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) breaks down the beginning colors into categories that are important to understand.

D, E, F - are considered colorless and very rare

G, H, I, J - are near colorless

K, L, M - beginning in the faint yellow range

The way to judge the color of a diamond is to always see the diamond unmounted or loose. It is unwise to buy a diamond of any significance in a mounting. Also, when judging a diamond, it is important to see it in good natural light. Providing the proper light may be a problem for some stores that do not have exposure to natural day light. We do not sanction buying a diamond without seeing it in good lighting because it distorts the diamonds true color grade. It is very important to have laboratory graded diamonds by reputable labs (GIA, EGL, etc.) to use as comparison when grading diamonds.
